PRESTONSBURG — A cornhole tournament at Big Sandy Community and Technical College drew players and volunteers from across the region, raising funds to support flood recovery efforts.

Thirty players from six counties and two states took part in the event on the BSCTC campus. At least eight additional community members volunteered to help run the tournament.

“The turnout from the community was great,” said Greg Gambill, an adjunct faculty member who organized the event. “We had players travel from as far as Georgetown.”

BSCTC staff and faculty supported the tournament throughout the day. Interim Chief Academic Officer Jessica Gambill worked concessions for seven hours to ensure guests were well-fed and comfortable throughout the day. Professor Toufic Saad engaged with participants, including a former student.

The college partnered with Old Timer’s Cornhole and Corntucky to organize the tournament.

Based on the response, organizers said they are exploring the possibility of making it a recurring fundraiser.

“Hopefully, we won’t need to host another for disaster relief,” Gambill said. “But this could evolve into a fundraiser for scholarships, general welfare, or other beneficial causes for our school and community.”

Proceeds from the tournament will go toward providing food, shelter and medical care for those affected by recent flooding in the region.
