Harper Lawson, a student at Warfield Elementary School, earned third place at the East KY Regional Science & Engineering Fair. The competition took place Friday at Big Sandy Community & Technical College, followed by an awards ceremony on Saturday at the Mountain Arts Center.

The annual science fair is for students in 4th-12th grades who win first place at their school fair in Breathitt, Floyd, Johnson, Knott, Lee, Letcher, Magoffin, Martin, Menifee, Morgan, Owsley, Perry, Pike, and Wolfe counties.

Lawson’s project titled “Pointing True North” explores how different needle materials affect the performance of a homemade compass.

Competing in the Earth and Environmental Science category, her hands-on investigation stood out among student entries from across the region.
