INEZ — Damian Cheek will be continuing his baseball career in Pippa Passes after signing with Alice Lloyd College on Friday in Inez. The catcher cements his name in history as the first from Martin County High School to sign with a college to play baseball.

“I’m looking forward to getting to play at the college level and gain experience for coaching,” Cheek said.

The slugger has 90 career hits with the Cards heading into his senior season. He has hit six homers, six triples and 22 doubles.

The five-year starter has 61 strikeouts on the mound.

“I want to show Elizabeth Mann and Michael Mann appreciation for helping me to reach my goals,” said Cheek. “I’d like to thank Devonna Maynard and T.C. for helping me and to everyone who has helped me in the past.”

With a bright future ahead of him, Cheek is going to give it his all before graduation. He believes every player should “always work hard.”

“You never know when it’s your last time on the field,” he said.

Cheek plans to major in teaching in either high school history or science. The student-athlete also aspires to coach baseball or football.
