INEZ — In an effort to strengthen emergency response capabilities in Martin County, Foothills Communications has donated a Starlink Mini to the county’s emergency services. The compact satellite system provides a mobile internet connection for first responders operating in remote and underserved areas of the county.
The donation comes as officials continue to navigate communications challenges during natural disasters.
Nick Endicott, director of Martin County 911, emphasized the importance of reliable connectivity during crises.
“Clear and stable communications are vital in responding to emergencies and disasters,” Endicott said. “Many times during disasters, like the recent flooding, cellular networks and other forms of internet communication become very congested. Starlink has allowed us to bridge the gap where normal cellular and terrestrial internet connectivity lacks coverage or the speeds needed to convey information quickly.”
Martin County Deputy Judge/Executive Carolea Mills spearheaded the effort, reaching out to Foothills Communications for the donation.
“It has significantly improved our connectivity in the field, especially in areas not served by cellular carriers,” Mills said. “We are very grateful for this donation.”
