Preserving history

Work is underway to replace the roof of the historic Martin County Courthouse, a step in preserving the building’s legacy and ensuring its future use. The restoration follows an April 2023 fire that caused significant damage.

Constructed between 1938 and 1941 as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration, the courthouse stands as a lasting symbol of the New Deal’s efforts to create jobs and modernize infrastructure during the Great Depression. Local workers built the structure using locally sourced materials.

The courthouse, Martin County’s fourth, will reopen as a venue for weddings and community events, eventually featuring a commercial kitchen. (Citizen photos by Roger Smith)
