Did you know the following verses from the book of Luke (6:47-49) have a lot to do with what we believe about the first three chapters of Genesis? “Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: “He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock. “But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.”
How does this pertain to Genesis? Just like a house needs to be built on a solid rock foundation or it will crumble, the first three chapters of Genesis lay the foundation for the rest of the Bible. After Chapter 3 of Genesis the rest of the Bible is about God’s plan of Redemption. For example, the first three chapters lay the foundation for understanding who God is.
The first three chapters teach us:
- Why there is death and suffering (sin).
- Evolution is wrong.
- God’s creation was six literal days.
- Marriage is between one man and one woman.
- Humans are not animals.
- There is one God.
- About the beginning of space, time and matter.
- Why we need a Savior.
The first three chapters are the foundation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They help us to understand the last book of the Bible (Revelation).
God begins with a foundation in Genesis and ends with a house in Revelation in which all righteousness will dwell.
In Genesis 3:17 the curse is announced.
In Revelation 22:3 the curse is removed.
In Genesis 3:18-19 we toil for food.
In Revelation 22:2 we have an abundance of food.
In Genesis 3:19 death for all.
In Revelation 21:4 no more death.
In Genesis 3:21 we wear coats of skin.
In Revelation 19:14 we wear clean linen.
In Genesis 3:24 Tree of Life is denied.
In Revelation 22:14 Tree of Life is supplied.
In Genesis 3:23 we are banished from paradise.
In Revelation 22:14 we have entrance into heaven.
In Genesis 3:15 Redemption promised.
In Revelation 5:9-10 Redemption accomplished.
In Genesis 3:24 angels block the way.
In Revelation 21:9 angels show the way.
Without a literal understanding of the first three chapters of Genesis we lose our understanding of God’s plan of Redemption and the foundation for the Gospel. Just as the Bible teaches in Luke 6:47-49, we must build our faith in Jesus (Creator and Savior) on a rock-solid foundation, which begins in the book of Genesis.
Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. Colossians 2:8
