
Maynard joins 500-point club

SALYERSVILLE — Martin County suffered a heartbreaking 62-59 loss in overtime to Paintsville in the 57th District Tournament on Feb. 24 at Magoffin County.
The Lady Cards had a three-point lead with just under two minutes remaining in regulation.
Paintsville’s Kylie Kinner dropped in a floater to pull within one.
Coming out of a Lady Cardinals timeout, Brooke Marcum sunk both free throws for some breathing room.
The Tigers quickly scored and sent the guard back to the line.
Marcum nailed both for a 50-47 lead. A Kinner three knotted the game back up with 13 seconds remaining.

Coach Robin Newsome set up a final play with Chloe May driving to the rim. No whistle on contact sent the two teams to extra minutes.
A May free throw gave Martin County a one-point lead but the Tigers responded and went ahead by two.
Marcum drove the length of the floor and scored the scoop shot for a tie-ballgame.
The Tigers unleashed a four-point surge for a 59-55 score.
A Marcum free throw and shot from deep wouldn’t be enough as Paintsville held on to advance to the championship game.
Marcum led Martin County with 23 points and six rebounds.
Maci Maynard contributed 19 points and dominated the boards with 16 rebounds for another double-double on the season.

Makenna Marcum finished with seven points and four rebounds. Candace Spaulding pulled down seven boards and scored four points.
May grabbed eight rebounds and hit for four points. Sophie Harless grabbed nine off the glass and scored a basket.
