MOUNTAIN CITIZEN
MARTIN COUNTY — With a winter storm in the forecast, Martin County Emergency Management announced on Friday night that warming centers will be open at the Martin County Senior Citizens Center and the fire departments in Turkey, Warfield and Pigeon Roost.
The announcement comes after the National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch for the region effective from Sunday morning through Tuesday morning. The forecast warns of the potential for “significant snow and freezing rain amounts,” with 2 to 6 inches of snow and one-quarter to one-half inch of ice possible.
Weather officials cautioned that the storm could cause widespread power outages and tree damage due to heavy ice accumulation.
Road conditions could deteriorate significantly, creating dangerous travel conditions during Monday’s morning and evening commutes, the NWS said.
After the storm subsides, forecasters predict a surge of frigid air, with wind chills potentially dipping to near or below zero by Thursday morning.
Meanwhile the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s District 12 is on high alert, with crews monitoring road conditions and preparing to treat and clear roads throughout the storm, officials said.
Authorities are urging drivers to prepare emergency car kits with essential items, including:
- A first-aid kit
- Extra coats, gloves, blankets or a sleeping bag
- Non-perishable food and water
- Baby supplies, such as formula, diapers and wipes
- A flashlight with extra batteries
- Portable phone chargers
- Pet food, water and other necessities
- Prescription medications
- An ice scraper and jumper cables
- A shovel and a bag of sand or cat litter
