Appalachian filmmaker brings opioid crisis drama ‘Hazard’ to theaters this month

CITIZEN STAFF REPORT

Eddie Mensore, an Appalachian-born filmmaker, unveils his latest drama, “Hazard,” a searing exploration of addiction and resilience set against the backdrop of a mining town gripped by the opioid crisis. The film, featuring a talented cast that includes Sosie Bacon, Alex Roe, Dave Davis, Steven Ogg, and West Virginia native Kevin Sizemore, debuts in theaters Jan. 10.

Filmed on location in Harlan County, “Hazard” tells the gripping story of Will (Roe), a reluctant drug dealer determined to protect his family from the very addiction ravaging their community. As Will navigates the perilous challenges of his double life, he faces increasingly fraught decisions that threaten to cost him everything. The film delves into his struggle to escape the cycle of dependency and reclaim hope amidst overwhelming adversity.

“Through my films, I aim to bridge the gap between my Appalachian community and the wider world, showcasing the resilience and culture of Appalachia, even as the region confronts some of its darkest challenges,” Mensore said.

The film will debut in more than two dozen theaters across Appalachia, with special advance screenings in the region from Jan. 6 to Jan. 9. Mensore, along with select cast members and Louisville-based producer Gill Holland, will host Q&A events during the theatrical run. A red-carpet premiere is on tap for Jan. 10 at Louisville’s Baxter Theatre.

The release will expand to include Lexington theaters on Jan. 17, followed by openings in Los Angeles on Feb. 7 and Atlanta on Feb. 14.

The film and its soundtrack feature a rich collection of original Appalachian Americana and roots music. Artists include Ben Sollee, GRLwood, Jonathan Glen Wood, James Lindsey, Luke Powers and Jaxon Lee Swain.

The “Hazard” soundtrack, executive produced by Gill Holland and released by Kentucky-based sonaBLAST! Records, is available on Spotify.

The film also features music by Nicholas Jamerson, Sundy Best, John R. Miller and Arlo McKinley.
