PIKEVILLE — The University of Pikeville’s Elliott School of Nursing celebrated the achievements of 27 Associate of Science in Nursing graduates with a pinning ceremony Friday in the Health Professions Education Building.

The ceremony marked the students’ successful completion of rigorous nursing coursework and clinical rotations, symbolizing their transition from student to nurse.

Karen Damron, Ph.D., RN, and dean of the College of Nursing and Human Services, addressed the graduates, commending their dedication and perseverance.

“This is a time for you, your fellow classmates and your families to come together and celebrate your accomplishments,” Damron said. “You can be assured too that for your dean and professors, this is a proud moment to witness your triumph in reaching your goals. Congratulations and enjoy.”

Several students received special honors during the ceremony:

Brianna Cole of Salyersville was awarded the Vivian Day Award for achieving the highest grade-point average in nursing courses.

Jessica Vickers of Belfry received the Elizabeth Akers Elliott Award, presented by the nursing faculty to the graduate who exemplifies critical thinking, professional judgment and compassionate care. This award holds special significance for the Elliott family, who established a trust fund in memory of Elizabeth Akers Elliott to support the nursing program.

Wesley Loudermilk of Phelps was honored with the Spirit of Nursing Award, chosen by classmates as the student they would most trust to care for themselves or their loved ones.

During the ceremony, graduates were pinned by nursing faculty. They recited the Florence Nightingale Pledge, a tradition that dates back to the 1860s when Nightingale began honoring her most outstanding graduate nurses.
