LONDON — Martin County traveled to South Laurel on Saturday to play in the Lisa Collins Classic. Brooke Marcum brought the it factor and earned herself the Player of the Game with 11 points, six rebounds and five steals in the 46-37 win over Casey County.
“I’m proud of all the kids for stepping up to come away with the win,” Coach Robin Newsome said of her Lady Cardinals.
Senior Candace Spaulding exploded hot out of the gate with five first-quarter points.
Two 3-balls from Chloe May and newcomer MaKenna Marcum gave the Cardinals a 16-12 lead.
Spaulding, B. Marcum, and M. Marcum each hit for two before halftime to knot the score up at 22.
Coming out of the break, May tickled the twine for another 3-pointer.
Sophie Harless got in on the action with a bucket and two free throws. Maci Maynard muscled in two baskets to wrap up the third quarter with a two-point advantage.
“We stepped up our defense in the fourth quarter holding them to five points and Brooke Marcum got going offensively. We outscored them 12-5 to get the win,” Coach Newsome recalled.
Four players scored in the final stanza to earn the victory.
“Maci picked up two early fouls in the first quarter and her third early in the second. Eighth grader Annaleigh Davis and seventh grader McKenna Marcum had to step up and play some key minutes,” Coach Newsome said.
Maynard and Spaulding notched nine points and six rebounds each. Maynard also had a block.
Harless netted six points, pulled down eight rebounds and had two steals.
May tallied six points, five rebounds and a steal. M. Marcum fired in five points, pulled down three rebounds and had a steal.
Davis came off the bench to pick a pocket and pull down a board.
The Lady Cards were scheduled for a district match-up with Magoffin on Tuesday. Details were not available at press time.
The squad will travel to Lexington Catholic on Thursday to play in the White, Greer and Maggard Holiday Classic.
