KERMIT, W.Va. — The glow of the holiday season shines a little brighter in Mingo, Martin and Wayne counties thanks to the unwavering efforts of Christian Help. This year, the organization continues its annual tradition of holiday generosity through its Christmas Distribution. Signups will continue through Dec. 13—or the 300-family cap.
This event takes place Dec. 21 at the old Kermit gymnasium, where each registered family will receive gifts for children and all the trappings for a traditional holiday meal.
“Our friends and donors want to make sure our children enjoy the magic of this special season,” Christian Help announced. “This year promises to be an amazing event. If you know a parent or guardian who’s struggling, please let them know.”
Eligible families—those with children from newborn to age 17 and an annual household income at or below $31,200—can register in person at Christian Help, 100 Lincoln Street, Kermit. The office operates from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Applicants must bring proof of residency (such as a valid ID), documentation showing custody of children (medical cards, Social Security cards, birth certificates or report cards), and proof of income (an SSI/SSDI statement, paystub or food stamp card). Qualifying families will receive an assigned number to streamline the distribution process.
While the Christmas Distribution is a marquee event, Christian Help’s reach goes far beyond holiday cheer. Their mission for the last 30 years has been to serve the low- to no-income population in Mingo and Martin counties. They address food insecurity, clothing needs, transportation needs, emergency financial assistance and more.
“Hunger does not sleep,” Christian Help proclaims, and neither does the food pantry in Kermit. The facility is open weekdays with emergency access on weekends. The organization does not limit pantry visits. Additionally, pop-up events distribute tons of fresh fruits and vegetables to local families throughout the year.
Christian Help provides a free shop for clothing, shoes, personal hygiene products, baby items, household goods, furniture, kitchen appliances and building materials. The only request is that you take no more than you need and refrain from selling donated goods.
For families in crisis, Christian Help provides emergency financial assistance to prevent utility shut-offs. They also assist with emergency home repairs, funeral expenses, medications, eyeglasses, dentures, heating fuel, and relocation due to domestic abuse.
Transit services exclusively for Mingo County residents bridge the transportation gap.
Christian Help extends its hospitality to volunteers visiting the area to lend a helping hand. Visitors can stay at the organization’s hospitality house at 31 Riverfront Road in Warfield. The home accommodates up to 25 people, with 18 beds, a fully equipped kitchen, internet, cable, and a dining area that seats 20.
For those interested in reserving the hospitality house, Christian Help welcomes inquiries at 304-393-4251.
