CITIZEN STAFF REPORT
INEZ — Taxpayers can score a 2% discount by paying their property tax bills from Dec. 1 to Dec. 31, according to a collection schedule that Martin County Sheriff John Kirk released Monday.
Starting Dec. 1, the sheriff’s office will accept payments in a variety of ways.
A drop box outside the sheriff’s office is for everyone’s convenience. However, Sheriff Kirk stressed that only checks or money orders should be deposited there.
Those who prefer to mail their payments can do so by sending them to P.O. Box 407, Inez, KY 41224. Include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you would like a receipt mailed back.
For those who prefer a face-to-face transaction, the sheriff will accept in-person payments at the office Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The office takes cash, checks and credit cards.
Here is the breakdown of discounts, penalties and deadlines:
- Dec. 1–Dec. 31, 2024: Pay early and get a 2% discount.
- Jan. 1–Jan. 31, 2025: No discount, but no penalty either—pay the face amount.
- Feb. 1–Feb. 28, 2025: Add a 5% penalty to your bill.
- March 1–May 15, 2025: Expect a 10% penalty plus a 10% add-on.
