INEZ — The 2024 Martin County flag football season wrapped its season Oct. 20 in what the players called the “Super Duper Flag Bowl.”

It was an in-county game with the kids divided up evenly. Both teams took three turns on offense for a total of 26 plays and regulation ended in a tie 8-8.

Each team got one more play from 2 yards out in overtime but could only score on a pass. For the first time this season, both teams ended up connecting on long passes in the end zone over 8 yards to end the Super Duper Bowl in a tie.

After winning rock, paper, scissors and choosing first possession, Willie Porter found Eli Greer running a slant from the right side for the first score in overtime.

Christian Davis dropped back and hit Waylon Porter on a flag route deep in the end zone for an exciting finish.

The team, composed of kindergarten through second grade, played seven games this season.

Flag Football is part of the county football league and is set up for kids to learn fundamentals, beginning gameplay like offense and defense, how to huddle up, and basic play calling.

All kids get even playing time and even action with the ball and defense. The kids are also encouraged to attend high school games and wear their jerseys on game day in support of the Cardinals.

Brian Davis, Michael Coleman and Ryan Howell coached the teams.

“The main priority of flag football and youth football is for the kids to fall in love with the game and have a great time. This creates a strong foundation and pride in the program,” volunteer coach Davis said.

The coaches would like to thank Josh Horn for providing new equipment for the kids and always getting the teams on the high school field for games.
