What is Amendment 2?
According to Senator Phillip Wheeler Amendment 2 would allow the Kentucky Legislature to take money away from public schools and give it to private schools. In simple terms it would take money away from our children and give it to children in private schools.
One of the recent advertising flyers mailed out by the ones supporting the amendment indicated that teachers’ salaries could be raised if the amendment passes. The ones supporting the amendment apparently think we are so stupid that we will believe that teachers’ salaries can be raised when the schools would have less money.
Who is behind Amendment 2?
A political action committee, Protect Freedom, and a group calling itself Kentucky Students First are the main supporters of the amendment. However, the vast majority of the money behind the amendment comes from a Pennsylvania billionaire, Peter Yass.
A report filed with the Federal Election Commission by Protect Freedom shows that it received $5,000,250 in contributions between July 1 and Sept. 30 of this year—and $5,000,000 of this money came from Peter Yass.
Who is Peter Yass?
Yass is the 32nd richest person in the world being worth $44.3 billion. It is probably a safe bet that his children do not go to public schools.
Why is Rand Paul appearing in ads supporting Amendment 2?
Protect Freedom is a national PAC closely affiliated with Paul. Since 2017 Yass has donated $34 million to Protect Freecom.
Of course we would not wish to imply that giving a politician $34 million would in any way influence that politician’s actions.
The other group—Kentucky Students First—its treasurer Kevin Broghamer is the treasurer of Rand Paul’s campaign committee.
Are we stupid enough to let some out-of-state billionaire buy our children’s future?
Said another way—are we stupid enough to vote yes on Amendment 2?
