PAINTSVILLE — Revenge is sweet. Martin County held off the defending champ Prestonsburg 2-1 Monday night in the second round of the 15th Region tournament at Johnson Central High School. The Cardinals will take on district rival Johnson Central for the championship Thursday (Oct. 17) at 8 p.m.

The Cards lost a heartbreaker last season to P’burg in the final round 2-1.

Faith Caldwell turned the tables this year and booted in both goals in the Martin County win.

Laura Hale and Jane Smith assisted on the goals.

Martin County’s Vittoria Dellmotta saved the day with five blocks between the posts.

Caldwell is ranked 16th in the state in scoring and second in assists.

Hale comes in at 39th in the top 50 scoring column and fifth in assists.

The dynamic duo has propelled Martin to be the 17th-ranked team in the state in scoring.

Head Coach Steven Gauze hopes to continue the Cardinals revenge tour in the championship game after falling to Central 1-0 earlier this season.

The winner will advance to the KHSAA state tournament.
