PAINTSVILLE — The 15th Region Girls Soccer Tournament began last week with the Martin County Cardinals (11-7) securing an 8-0 mercy-rule victory over the Lawrence County Bulldogs (4-10) in the first round Oct. 8 at Johnson Central High School.

Martin County is riding a three-game winning streak, all by mercy rule. The fast-paced squad is ranked 15th in the state for scoring.

The Cards are scheduled to take on region rival Prestonsburg (12-4) at 8 p.m. Monday (Oct. 14) at Johnson Central.

Head coach Steven Gauze’s team split the regular-season series with the Blackcats, suffering a 5-1 loss in August before bouncing back with a 3-2 win Sept. 7.
