INEZ — Martin County High School’s soccer team honored their seniors on Oct. 1 before defeating the Paintsville Tigers by an 8-0 mercy rule at Cardinal Stadium.
Martin County’s first goal came 10 minutes into the contest when Faith Caldwell booted a corner kick in that skimmed over a Paintsville Tiger into the goal.
Alexis Sammons put the second goal on the board when her teammate Laura Hale passed off to her.
With 21 minutes remaining in the first half, Hale scored the first of her four goals in the top of the net.
The feisty senior broke loose in the middle of the field and snuck one into the bottom corner for her second goal.
She quickly followed that up one minute later and placed a kick in the same exact spot to put the Cardinals up 5-0.
Caldwell received a penalty kick with just under four minutes remaining. The swift kicker placed it perfectly for her second goal of the evening.
Mia Preece got in on the action after Caldwell assisted her. Preece sent one into the net for a 7-0 Martin County lead.
Shortly into the second half of the game, Caldwell and Hale passed back and forth between each other. Hale broke through the defense and sent it in for the 8-0 mercy win over the Tigers on her senior night.
Martin County finished the regular season 10-7 overall and 9-2 in their region.
The squad was scheduled to take on Lawrence County on Tuesday in the first round of the Super Region tournament. A win would advance them to play at Johnson Central on Oct. 14.
Martin County defeated the Bulldogs 8-0 on Sept. 26.
