CITIZEN STAFF REPORT
INEZ — Martin County students took the Kentucky Summative Assessment (KSA) in the spring of 2024 with results released last week by the state.
The annual assessment is given to students in grades 3-8, 10 and 11. KSA provides content area assessments, including reading and mathematics (grades 3 through 8 and 10), science (grades 4, 7, 11), on-demand writing, editing and mechanics (grades 5, 8, 11), and social studies (grades 5, 8, 11).
Under the state accountability system, schools are assigned a color based on their performance: Red (lowest), Orange, Yellow, Green and Blue (highest).
Eden Elementary led the district with the highest overall score of 69.3, just 0.7 points shy of a Green rating, marking a significant 14-point increase from the previous year.
Giving cause to celebrate, Martin County Middle School exited Targeted Support and Improvement status.
“We are immensely proud of Martin County Middle School for successfully exiting TSI status this year,” Martin County Schools Superintendent Larry James said.
“The dedication of our students, staff, and teachers in setting and achieving their goals has been remarkable.”
The overall score is calculated based upon performance in Reading/Math, Science/Social Studies/Writing, Quality of School Climate and Safety Survey results, Postsecondary Readiness (high school only), and Graduation Rate (high school only).
Martin County Middle School earned an overall Yellow rating, Warfield Elementary and Martin County High School both received an Orange rating, while Inez Elementary received a Red rating.
Eden Elementary earned Green ratings in both Reading/Math and Science/Social Studies/Writing. Warfield Elementary received a Yellow rating for Reading/Math and Green for Science/Social Studies/Writing. Inez Elementary scored Orange in Reading/Math and Red in Science/Social Studies/Writing. Martin County Middle School achieved Yellow in both categories, while Martin County High School received an Orange rating.
In terms of the Quality of School Climate and Safety Survey, both Inez and Eden Elementary schools received Blue ratings, while Martin County Middle and Martin County High School earned Green, and Warfield Elementary received Yellow.
“As we move forward, our mission is to create a culture of excellence where every student is supported and challenged to reach their highest potential,” remarked James. “Together, we can continue to make our school district a place where every student can succeed.”
Due to the Kentucky Department of Education transitioning to a new vendor, the 2023-2024 School Report Card Suite will be released in a phased approach. Detailed KSA school results will be available in the School Report Card profile in November, with a link to be provided at a later date.
