DEBORD — A 77-year-old woman from Debord was arrested Monday accused of a brazen scheme of submitting fraudulent invoices for the care of a deceased woman.

Martin County Sheriff’s Office deputies took Janet F. Meade into custody at her home on an indictment warrant out of Floyd County following a felony charge of theft by deception.

According to the indictment issued in June by a Floyd County grand jury, Meade allegedly submitted invoices spanning four years—from October 2019 through February 2024—to the Big Sandy Area Development District claiming reimbursement for the personal care of Goldie Meade—who had already passed away.

The false claims reportedly exceeded $10,000.
