CITIZEN STAFF REPORT
PIKEVILLE — Kentucky State Police (KSP) troopers might not wear capes, but this weekend 55 of them were honored like the heroes they are. At the Sworn Awards ceremony, KSP celebrated the officers who have made it their mission to protect Kentucky’s 120 counties, including seven from Pikeville Post 9.
KSP has more than 1,000 sworn personnel wearing the badge of honor, which is the highest number of troopers the agency has employed since 2017.
These officers are no strangers to stepping into danger or taking on immense challenges. In 2023 alone, KSP responded to 407,493 calls for assistance, checked on thousands of residents during severe weather, tackled the state’s deadly drug epidemic head-on, obtained justice for victims, ran into unthinkable dangers and partnered with local law enforcement to enhance safety across the state. And, yes—they have walked into plenty of situations most people would run from.
Commissioner Phillip Burnett Jr. did not hold back on praise for his team.
“We recognize the dedication, bravery and extraordinary efforts of our troopers and officers,” he said during the ceremony. “Whether it was a heroic act in the face of danger, an exceptional investigation that led to justice or a moment of compassion that made a lasting impact, each of you demonstrated what it means to serve with honor.”
A captain, a detective and five troopers from the Pikeville Post 9 area were among those honored.
Captain Randal Surber snagged the Career Service Achievement Award after 21 years on the force.
Detective Joseph Coleman was named Post 9’s Detective of the Year, with eight years of service.
Trooper Terry Mounts, a two-year veteran, earned Post 9 Trooper of the Year.
Trooper Colbert Maynard, 10 years in, was honored with a KSP Citation for Bravery.
Trooper Timothy Smith, with two years on the job, also received a Citation for Bravery.
Trooper Tanner Wood, another two-year veteran, added his own KSP Citation for Bravery to the list.
Trooper Christopher Dials, a 21-year veteran working with the Electronic Crimes Branch, was recognized with yet another Citation for Bravery.
