INEZ — The Martin County High School volleyball team has had their best opening record in years. The Cards are 4-0 to begin the 2024 season after defeating Phelps, Tug Valley and Grace Christian last week.
On Aug. 20 the Cards began their season at Phelps. Martin County stung the Hornets 25-22 in the opening set. They followed up with a 25-16 win in the second before falling in the third 25-18. The Cards bounced back in the fourth set 25-21 to take the match victory.
Martin County took on Phelps in Inez on Aug. 22. With the first set score at 24-20, Addison Kerr rose above the net for a block to win.
The next set went back and forth between the two teams. Knotted at 26 apiece, Kerr went for the kill to help win the second set.
Phelps took the next forcing a fourth set. At a 24-22 Martin County lead, libero Haley Robinson bumped up a hit to Chloe Jude at the net. Jude placed it back over to Phelps for the match win.
On Saturday, the team hosted the Cardinal Classic with Tug Valley and Grace Christian in a round-robin matchup. Martin County defeated both squads in straight sets.
The Lady Cards were scheduled to host Paintsville for their first District match on Monday. Details were not available at press time.
The Volley Cards will travel to Betsy Layne to take on Pikeville in the opening round of the All ‘A’ Classic on Wednesday (Aug. 28) at 6 p.m.
On Thursday, they host Lawrence County on their home court.
