WARFIELD — The Lady Cards took down a tough Betsy Layne squad on Aug. 20 at Martin County Middle School. The A-team snuck by with 29-26 win in a dandy. The B-team fell short 28-22. The C-team squad came away with a 17-11 win.
Lexi Cline put Martin County on the board quick when she banked in a 3 from the corner 15 seconds into the game.
Kennedy Mills brought down a board and went up for a putback.
Cline started the second stanza out nailing two 3-pointers from the left wing. Mills and Annaleigh Davis both hit a bucket for a 16-12 Cardinals lead at the half.
Martin County kept things going in the second half when Cline scored a jumper.
Bri Muncy got in on the action with a turnaround in the lane.
Anna Hinkle dropped in a jump shot from the free throw extended to force a Bobcat timeout with the Cards up 22-14.
Betsy Layne battled back in the final period to get within two.
With the Cards up 22-20, Davis dished out an assist to Mills.
Three minutes remained and Martin County decided to play cat and mouse with a 27-24 lead.
Davis tallied a free throw to take a four-point lead.
Betsy Layne refused to back down and scored with 8.5 seconds remaining.
Up only two, Davis toed the line and dropped in a free throw for a 29-26 lead.
A stifling defense weathered the storm for the Cards to come away with the win.
Cline led all scorers with 11 points. Davis finished with eight points. Mills poured in six. Muncy and Hinkle each hit for two.
Kinslee Callaham opened up scoring for the B-team with a 3 from the wing.
Combo guard Harleigh Maynard hit a bucket with 10 seconds to go in first for the Cards.
Down 16-5 in the third quarter, Callaham buried a 3 from the logo to keep Martin County close.
It would not be enough though as the Bobcats came away with a six-point win.
Maynard and Callaham each finished with six points. Alivia Stacy dropped in four. KB Muncy, Zoe Sammons and Bradlyne Stafford each contributed two points.
The Lady Cards came away with a 17-11 win in the C-team matchup.
Emily Mills led with six points. KB Muncy fired in four points. Stacy finished with three. Maynard and Jeannah Flemings dished in two points each.
