Kentucky coal counties receive mining fee refunds

CITIZEN STAFF REPORT

FRANKFORT — Fiscal courts in 29 Kentucky counties, including Martin, Floyd, Johnson, Lawrence and Pike, are set to receive a collective refund of $119,625 from mining permit and acreage fees, Gov. Andy Beshear announced Aug. 7.

The refunds, calculated as a percentage of fees paid by surface coal mining companies within each county, are administered by the Kentucky Department for Natural Resources. The department collects these fees and allocates a portion back to coal-producing counties for use in projects selected by local fiscal courts.

Martin County will receive $1,541.67, Floyd County $7,066.67, Johnson County $1,216.67, Lawrence County $250, and Pike County $10,791.67.

Beshear noted that this year’s total of $119,625 represents a $15,000 increase from the previous year.

“This funding is a valuable resource for our communities and will be put to good use,” Beshear stated in a press release. “Every dollar counts, and I’m proud to be able to return a bit of it to those communities that have supported our nation for decades.”
