LOGAN, W.Va. — A Mingo County man was found dead from injuries sustained in a crash on Route 10 in Logan County, authorities said.
The family of John Newsome, 43, of Kermit, reported Newsome missing to Mingo County Sheriff Joe Smith’s office after he failed to return home from work early Wednesday. Newsome worked in the Elk River Mines.
Family members posted on Facebook on Wednesday, expressing concern when Newsome did not come home.
Sheriff Smith said his office obtained a warrant to ping Newsome’s cellphone. That trace indicated the phone was in Logan County on Route 10 between Logan and Man.
The MCSD collaborated with Logan County Deputy T.C. Johnson and his team.
Authorities found Newsome Thursday in a vehicle that had crashed over an embankment in Logan County, Sheriff Smith reported.
Law enforcement followed fresh tracks going over an embankment and toward the Guyandotte River. That is where they found the vehicle with Newsome inside, Sheriff Smith said.
Deputy T.C. Johnson confirmed that Newsome died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Sheriff Smith noted that Newsome had only recently started his new position at Elk River Mines.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
