Douglas Jason Muncy
1975—2024
Douglas Jason Muncy, 48, passed away on Thursday, June 27, 2024, in Memphis, Tennessee, after a brief but valiant battle against colon cancer. A private family service will be held at a later date. Coleman Funeral Home of Southaven, Mississippi, is handling the arrangements.
Douglas served proudly in the United States Marine Corps for five years. He obtained his associate degree in logistics, using that degree to become employed at the VA in Memphis as a logistics supervisor.
Douglas was known for his positive outlook, outgoing personality, and caring but stubborn nature. He had an unorthodox sense of humor and was always looking to find adventure in everyday life and unexpected places. Whether enjoying Wisconsin cheese curds, Brachos, (nachos with Bratwurst) demolition derbies, rodeos, or roller derbies, Douglas embraced life with enthusiasm and a love of fun.
Douglas carried a massive backpack filled with supplies for any possible emergency or need. A few of the items he kept inside were rain ponchos, pens, notebooks, nail clippers, phone chargers for both iPhone and Android, several 12-ounce Stokers fine-cut natural tobacco cans, Reese cups, Oreos, jelly beans, sun hats and Carmex. Douglas believed in drinking water and was rarely seen without his Paul Bunyan-sized USMC water bottle. He kept life straws, thermal blankets and MREs, and rain barrels so that he would be prepared for anything life threw at him. Douglas enjoyed wearing t-shirts with funny comments on them.
Douglas did not enjoy things; he enjoyed people and adventures. While on leave from the Marine Corps, he went on a trip out West with his dad and toured five national parks in a four-day span, taking only 12 pictures for either proof of his attendance or his profound appreciation of nature, either of which is possible but to which he would never admit.
While on one of his many adventures, Douglas invented the not-yet-patented “Bathtub in a Jug,” a container of Wet Ones enhanced by green rubbing alcohol. He believed that adventures should not be hindered by trifling concerns of hygiene or unnecessary luxuries. He believed the only wrong kind of laugh was the one that you would not let out, and if an attempt at humor was made by anyone, the only rule was to laugh.
Despite being diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in January of this year and undergoing chemotherapy until the end of May, Douglas continued to work. He did not complain and continued to plan adventures with those he loved. At his core, Douglas, in the words of the great poet Eric Idle of Monty Python, always looked on the bright side of life.
Douglas is survived by his fiancée Jennifer Green, her son, Sean Patrick Green, and his cats, Chloe, Frankie and Skittens, all of Southaven, Mississippi; his parents, Drewie and Ardonis Muncy of Inez, Kentucky; his sister, Lynette (Don Yates) Muncy of Inez, Kentucky; his brother, Mark (Amy) Muncy of Greer, South Carolina; and his nieces and nephews, Caroline Yates, David Muncy, Anna Muncy, and Josh Muncy. They all loved him and will miss him dearly.
