PRESTONSBURG — Martin County senior citizens brought home an impressive array of medals from the 37th annual Big Sandy Senior Games. The seniors competed on dates in May and June and then received their medals at a banquet at Jenny Wiley on June 12.
Competing against peers from Floyd, Pike, Johnson and Magoffin counties, Martin County seniors showcased their athletic prowess across various age and gender categories.
Doug Goble led the medal count with first place in lawn bowling, softball toss, cornhole, horseshoes and basketball free throw. Goble also earned a second-place finish in football throw and third-place finishes in shuffleboard, archery and basketball shoot.
Esther Kirk made an impact, winning first place in the mile walk, softball toss, cornhole and basketball free throw. She added to her tally with second place in basketball shoot and third in horseshoes and archery.
Norma Jarrell demonstrated her versatility with a first-place win in horseshoes, second in bowling and third in shuffleboard.
Other notable winners included:
Bertha Jude: First place in lawn bowling and second in shuffleboard.
Ida Ward: First place in football toss.
Dovie Crum: Second place in softball toss and horseshoes and third in basketball shoot.
Elsie Lowe: Second place in lawn bowling and third in bowling.
Julia Chance: Third place in lawn bowling and horseshoes.
Loretta Dalton: Third place in football throw and cornhole.
Norma L. Bowen: Third place in shuffleboard.
“This event is one that our seniors enjoy,” said Jennifer Crum, director of the Martin County Senior Citizens Center. “They would love to see more participants next year.”
