INEZ — Head Coach Robin Newsome and the Lady Cards wrapped up their summer play with the arrival of the KHSAA dead period.

Potential, confidence and improvement are a few of the things Coach saw from her team.

The squad recently dominated Tug Valley 55-29 and Hurley 68-26 when traveling to Phelps.

“I felt we improved each time out,” Coach Newsome said of her team. “They gained a lot of confidence and were just coming together and finding their own team identity near the end of summer play. Once this group commits and buys in, they can be a very special group.”

The Lady Cards began their summer with a two-day shooting and fundamental camp with Jim Clayton.

They traveled to Raceland to play in the Aries League and attended camps at Transylvania and the University of the Cumberlands.

When hosting games on June 21 in Martin County, the team clobbered Tug Valley 54-12. The JV squad won 37-30.

“The kids worked really hard, and we weren’t ready for the summer games to end,” Coach continued. “They have a lot of potential and talent.”

The team then traveled to Pikeville High School to continue their summer trek with a workout and practice with current University of Pikeville Coach Clifton Williams.

Coach Newsome was impressed with the work ethic when the Lady Cards ran “through a really good workout and competitive practice with games and skill-based activities.”

“I saw a lot of good things and a lot we need to work on. We will get back in the gym after the dead period and continue to get better.”
