INEZ — In a momentous gathering, adult education programs from Martin and Lawrence counties joined forces to celebrate the GED graduating class of 2024. The event, hosted June 19 at the Collier Center in Inez, marked the achievements of 44 graduates.

The two counties worked together as a community to assist GED students towards success. The event marked the first time that these two programs gathered in one place for the graduation ceremony.

Whitley Perry was among the 44 students. Getting to graduation, she mainly wished that she would have done it sooner.

“It makes me feel very proud,” Perry said. “I’m very excited, a little bit nervous, just because I’m not used to getting in front of people. But it makes me very proud of myself to know that I have accomplished something that I had put off.”

Donnie Osborn, program director for KDC Adult Education, commended the graduates on their perseverance and future plans.

“Each of our students has met with a college counselor, filled out their financial aid application, and determined their next steps, whether it is to go to Millard College in Louisa, Morehead State, Big Sandy or Ashland Community Technical College,” Osborne explained. “Some have obtained their GED so that they can maintain employment.”

Osborn emphasized the program’s flexibility, noting that it offers classes designed to accommodate the busy schedules of adult learners.
