Charles Donald Newman

1938—2024

Charles Donald Newman, 86, of Crum, West Virginia, departed this life on June 21, 2024, surrounded by his family at his home.

Born March 13, 1938, in Hardy, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Joseph R. and Bertha Mae (Trout) Newman.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by five brothers, Joe Newman Jr, Bobby J. Newman, Thomas Newman, Lloyd E. Newman and Jimmy Newman; and four sisters, Anna L Newman, Geraldine (Newman) Wilson, Patsy Ann (Newman) Gauze and Barbara Ellen (Newman) Wilson.

Charles attended church at the Crum Missionary Baptist Church.

He was raised in West Virginia, where he graduated from Kermit High School in May 1956 and entered the U.S. Navy in June 1956. Charles attended Basic Training and Teleman “A” School at the Naval Training Center in Bainbridge, Maryland. He reported aboard the USS Mount McKinley AGC-7 in December 1956 and deployed to the Mediterranean in early January 1957. Upon Completion of three Mediterranean cruises, two North Atlantic cruises, a South American cruise and other Naval exercises, including the Lebanon Crisis of 1958 Operation BLUE BAT, he was released from active duty in April 1960. In August 1962 he re-entered the Navy and was assigned to Commander Amphibious Group Four Staff. During this assignment, he participated in the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, the Dominican Republic Crisis of 1965, the Recovery of the Astronauts of Gemini 11 of 1966 and other Naval exercises. In 1967, he was assigned to the CINCLANTFLT/SACLANT Staff. At the end of this assignment, he was selected as a candidate for the Associate Degree Completion Program. He attended Del Mar Junior College in Corpus Christi, Texas, earned an associate degree in applied science data processing and was ordered to the USS PONCE LPD-15.

Charles served as Senior Enlisted Advisor of the Command along with his normal duties as Operation Chief. After two Mediterranean cruises, two Caribbean cruises, two Northern Europe/ Atlantic cruises and other Naval exercises, he was advanced to Master Chief Radioman and assigned to Fleet Training Center, Norfolk, Virginia, as Director/Chief Instructor of the Teletype Maintenance School. He retired on the first day of May 1983 in the grade of Master Chief Petty Officer.

After his retirement from the Navy, he went on to work for Columbia Gas Transmission Corporation and retired as a supervisor of several compressor stations and associated pipelines. He was a member of Ocean View 335 AF & AM in good standing and a 32-degree Scottish Rite, a lifetime member of the West Virginia Chapter14 Disabled American Veterans, a member of Post 8429 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Branch 60 Fleet Reserve Association and Post 93 of the American Legion.

Charles is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Magaline M. (Davis) Newman; two children, Kena Elaine Newman and Charles D. (Lorinda Greer) Newman II, all of Crum, West Virginia; and his big buddy and little buddy grandsons, Charles D. “Chip” (Amber) Newman III and John Thomas (Kendra) Newman; two great-grandchildren, Maggie and Kylan Newman; and one great-great-granddaughter, Delilah Newman. He is also survived by three sisters, Connie Sue (Newman) Price and Brenda Jo (Newman) Harper, both of Michigan, and Jackie Lynn (Newman) Gauze of Inez, Kentucky; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 29, 2024, at 11 a.m. at the Warfield Chapel of the Callaham Callaham Funeral Home, with Will Davis officiating. Burial will follow at the Mount View Memory Gardens in Maher, West Virginia. Friends may visit the chapel on Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of the Callaham Funeral Home, Inez, Kentucky.
