Woodrow Slone Jr.
1951—2024
Woodrow Slone Jr., 72, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his family on June 14, 2024.
Born Nov. 17, 1951, Woody was a lifelong resident of Inez and a graduate of Morehead State University. He was an elementary school teacher prior to entering the coal industry, which became his passion.
Woody found his place and spent the remainder of his career teaching mine safety and training mine rescue teams. He cared deeply about his teams, and it was one of his greatest joys to watch them compete in mine rescue competitions across the country.
The only thing he loved more than his work was his family, who he considered his greatest love and achievement.
Woody is preceded in death by his parents, Woodrow Sr. and Dixie Slone; his brother, Roger Slone; and granddaughter, Angelique Iams.
Survivors include his loving wife, Gloria; daughters Diana (John) Wheeler, Melissa (Brian) Ellison, Brandie (Eddie) Hobbs, Sonja Blackburn and Stephanie (Judes) Boulay; grandchildren Candace Pierce, Desiree (Tate) Harmon, Michael Dean (Jennifer) Haney, Dillon (Brittany) Warner, Brittany Ellison and Malcolm Boulay; eight great-grandchildren; and his brother Bill (Barbara) Slone.
The family had a visitation Monday, June 17, 2024, at the Crum Funeral Home in Inez. In lieu of flowers, please help children in medical need through St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org).
