RUSSELL — After heavy rainfall delayed the Ohio Valley Conference tournament for a week, the Martin County Middle School Lady Cards took the field to face Russell in the semifinals, falling short 3-0 to end their season.

Martin County defeated East Carter 2-0 in the opening round of the tournament. The victory set up a rematch of last season’s championship match between the Lady Cards and Russell—the defending champion and tournament favorite.

Despite the underdog status, Martin County moved the ball well on offense in the first half, generating some scoring opportunities, but could not convert these chances into goals.

Martin County’s defense looked sharp, keeping Russell frustrated with only a few chances to shoot. However, a controversial moment led to Russell scoring when a ball seemingly stopped by the Lady Cards’ goalkeeper was ruled to have crossed the line, giving Russell a 1-0 lead at halftime.

The Lady Cards intensified their offensive efforts in the second half but again could not find the net. Coach Steven Gauze shifted to a more aggressive formation in the final 10 minutes, pushing for an equalizer, but despite increased pressure and more shots, the goals did not materialize.

Russell capitalized on the open play and added two more goals to close the game.

Coach Gauze remained optimistic and proud despite the loss.

“Somebody forgot to tell us we were underdogs tonight,” Gauze said. “They fought for every ball, backed each other up, and did everything they could to win. Take the first-half goal away and the second half would have been different. The last two goals were on me because we had to take chances if we were going to score. They have absolutely no reason to hang their heads down because they left everything on the field.”

He added, “The entire team will be back again next season and this game shows you how good we could be.”

Russell went on to claim their second consecutive championship by defeating Johnson Central 3-1 in the final.

During the awards ceremony, Martin County players Annaleigh Davis and Jazlynn Jude were honored as part of the All-OVC Team for their standout performances throughout the season.

“Both girls had a great year for the Lady Cards, being threats on offense and standing out defensively as well,” said Gauze.

The Lady Cards wrapped up the season with a 9-4 record, securing the district runner-up position and a spot in the OVC semifinal. Over the past four years, the middle school soccer program has compiled an impressive record of 38-12-2. The Lady Cards won the district championship and finished as OVC runner-up in 2023.

With no players graduating to the high school this year, the team looks to continue its success next season.

“Next year expect big things,” said Gauze.
