INEZ — The Martin County High School baseball team lost two at home this week. After the Cards won 11 of their first 13 games, they have dropped their last eight.
The following is a recap of last week’s action:
MCHS vs. East Ridge
The Cards could not close it out Saturday at home against East Ridge. Despite outhitting the Warriors nine to five and seeing eleven runners on base, East Ridge took this one 5-4.
The visitors jumped out 1-0 in the first inning.
Another score would not come until the bottom of the fourth.
Chase Stacy took a free trip to first to lead off the inning.
Sophomore Hunter Moore hit a zinger to short to put two on.
Aidan Mann hit into a fielder’s choice. Stacy flew into home after an error by East Ridge’s shortstop to knot the score at 1.
The Cards left three ducks on a pond to close the inning.
Martin County entered the sixth stanza looking at a 3-1 deficit.
Outfielder Evan Mills singled on a fly ball to center field. With Mills and Spence on base, Caige Presley belted a fly ball to the outfield for a double that scored both runners.
The Cards would fly out with a runner on base to roll into the final inning tied 3-3.
The Warriors managed to drive in two runs to go up 5-3. Stacy ended their at-bat with East Ridge swinging.
With two outs in the bottom of the final inning, Moore cracked a line drive to center field.
Mann walked to first and slugger Collin Mills rattled a line drive to load the bases.
On a 2-1 count, Moore sprinted home on a wild pitch to pull the Cards within 1.
With two runners on, Eli Mills hit a grounder to shortstop and was thrown out at first to close the game 5-4.
Moore and Evan Mills were 2-3 on the day. Presley had two hits and two RBIs. Damian Cheek knocked a double.
MCHS vs. Fairview
Martin County could not get things going against Fairview the night before. The Cards managed only a pair of runs to fall 10-2 Friday in Inez.
Damian Cheek was 2-2 on the day with a walk and a double. He also struck out two on the mound and crossed home plate.
Brock Messer hit a two-bagger and scored a run for the Cards.
Chase Stacy drove in a teammate for an RBI.
Martin County was back in action last night at Betsy Layne. Details were unavailable at press time.
They will honor their seniors Thursday night in their final home game of the regular season when they take on the Bobcats again at 6 p.m.
District tournament play begins next week.
