WILLIAMSON, W.Va. — The Mingo County Health Department issued a warning Tuesday, May 7 about several overdoses relating to the drug fentanyl.

The warning, which appeared on social media, stated the Mingo County Health Department had received 13 overdose reports within the previous 48 hours, “indicating potentially contaminated substances being used.” The health department stated that quick response teams had been dispatched throughout the county.

The overdoses were thought to be fentanyl-related, the health department said.

Naloxone is available for all Mingo County residents.

Overdose deaths in the United States tied to the powerful synthetic opioid fentanyl soared in the last five years. According to the CDC, over 150 people die every day from overdoses related to synthetic opioids like fentanyl.

Even in small doses, fentanyl can be deadly. Like other opioids, the drug can suppress breathing and lead to unconsciousness or death.
