INEZ — Martin County Middle School girls soccer team finished up their regular season last week with a 4-0 victory over Boyd County at home.

The Lady Cards looked determined to finish the regular season with a win and went on the attack early. The Boyd County defense held strong with the Lady Cards unable to capitalize on several shots on goal. Annaleigh Davis found the back of the net before halftime to give Martin County the 1-0 lead.

Coach Steven Gauze made some changes in the second half leading to more chances to score. Davis was able to add two more goals for a hat trick by the end of the game.

Maddy Goble scored a fourth goal for Martin County to seal the deal and give Martin County the win.

Martin County finishes the regular season 7-3 and ranked second in the district.

Lawrence County will host district play this year, which kicked off May 6. The Lady Cards were set to take on Lawrence County in the first round May 7, but details from that game were not available by press time.

Last season, Martin County won the district title and was runner-up in the OVC Conference.

Six players from last year’s team were eighth graders and moved up to high school last fall.

This year, the Lady Cards are a very young team having no eighth graders. The girls took most people by surprise, finishing second in the district behind Johnson Central, which has 10 eighth graders.

“I’m really proud of these girls,” Coach Gauze said. “A lot of the girls have worked hard in the offseason and it shows. Finishing second in our district is a huge accomplishment since we are so young. I am excited to see how we play in district tournament.”

He added, “The most exciting thing is that I get the entire team back next season. If they keep working hard it’s going to be another exciting year for us.”
