INEZ — Martin County baseball has hit an unfavorable streak after starting the season at 12-5. The Cards hit a wall, losing three games last week.
The following is a recap of last week’s action:
MCHS vs. Paintsville
The Cards could not stifle the Tigers’ hot bats in Tuesday night’s game in Paintsville. Martin County fell to the Tigers 11-1 in the district match-up.
Damian Cheek singled on a hard ground ball to center field in the bottom of the third.
Hunter Moore smashed a double for the Cards. Aiden Horn singled to drive Moore in for Martin County’s lone run.
Moore was 2-2 and pitched relief. He gave up zero hits and zero earned runs while striking out four and walking one.
MCHS vs. Paintsville
Martin County had a rematch May 1 with the Tigers but could not overcome a seven-run stretch in the third and fourth innings and fell 10-0.
Things started right for the Cards when Aiden Horn led off with a single.
MC could not manage another hit until the bottom of the fourth when Chase Stacy hit a line drive.
Hunter Moore hit a shot to center field and made his way to second base. Eli Mills reached first after an error from Paintsville’s pitcher.
The Cards could not convert hits to runs and dropped to 2-4 in district play.
MCHS vs. Belfry
The Cardinals allowed four runs in the bottom of the sixth and picked up a loss 6-2 to Belfry on the road May 3.
Martin County entered the sixth inning down 2-0. Brock Messer and Damian Cheek took a free trip to first with Chase Stacy up to bat.
Messer flew into home plate on a wild pitch. Stacy laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Cheek to third.
Hunter Moore was up to bat when Cheek snuck across home to tie the game 2-2.
Belfry bounced back in the bottom of the inning with four more runs.
Martin County did not have an answer for the Pirates.
Horn was 1-3 at the plate. Messer stole two bases, while Cheek and Horn stole one.
