PHELPS — The Martin County Cardinals defeated Phelps 8-3 on the road April 23 for their 12th win of the season.
Hunter Moore took the mound for the Martin County Cardinals and led the team to victory with a strong performance. Moore pitched four innings, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out four and walking two. Knox Maynard relieved Moore in the top of the fifth inning, giving up one run on one hit, and recording five strikeouts and one walk.
The Cardinals got off to a good start, scoring one run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead over the Hornets.
Phelps fought back in the bottom of the first to gain a 2-1 advantage over the Cardinals.
Both teams went scoreless in the second inning.
The Cardinals added two runs in the third, two in the fourth and two in the sixth, extending their lead to 7-3.
Phelps managed to score one more run in the fifth inning but was unable to mount a comeback.
Martin County sealed the victory with another run in the seventh.
The Cardinals had six hits. Aiden Horn went 2-for-3 and scored four runs. Damien Cheek, Hunter Moore, Eli Mills, and Collin Mills each contributed a hit for the Cardinals.
