Second fatal UTV collision in Pike County in less than a day

PIKE COUNTY — A fatal UTV collision occurred early Sunday, April 21 morning on Upper Johnson Creek Road in Kimper, marking the second deadly UTV incident in Pike County within seven hours.

Michael Hardin, 34, of Kimper, was pronounced dead at the scene, and Kyle Hardin, 38, of Phelps, was hospitalized.

Police said the accident happened when a Polaris UTV exited the roadway, traveled down an embankment and struck a tree. The incident was reported to Kentucky State Police Post 9 in Pikeville at 5:38 a.m.

Detective Jason Merlo, a KSP accident reconstructionist, is investigating.

KSP responded to an earlier fatal crash involving a UTV at 11:39 p.m. Saturday, April 20 on State Highway 1056 in McCarr. The first accident claimed the life of 28-year-old Michael Sincell of Freeburn.

Police said Dalton Mounts, 29, also of Freeburn, was operating the UTV when it left the roadway and overturned.

Detective Joshua Scott, KSP accident reconstructionist, is investigating the first incident.
