1946—2024

Mary Jo Allen Brown, 77, of Walker, West Virginia, died Feb. 13, 2024, at Eagle Pointe Care Facility, Parkersburg.

She was born Dec. 27, 1946, in Portsmouth, Virginia, the daughter of the late Robert L. Allen and Jane Robinson Allen, and lived in Inez, Kentucky, throughout her childhood.

She attended Georgetown College, the University of Kentucky and graduated from Marietta College in 1978 and 1994. She retired from GE Plastics (formerly Borg Warner Chemicals) after 34 years. She also edited and published a regional genealogy newsletter for many years, Appalachian Roots.

She was a lifelong member of the Eastern Star Chapter 389, a member of many genealogical societies, and Baptist by faith.

She is survived by her brother, Bob Allen of Inez, Kentucky; a niece, Betsy Allen of Webbville, Kentucky; and brother-in-law, Jess Brown and his daughter Cyndi of Kennesaw, Georgia, his stepsons Alan Fralick II of Atlanta, Georgia, and Michael Fralick (Anne) of Navarre, Florida, and other extended family on Jim’s side. She is also survived by many cousins scattered over the country and many friends in the Parkersburg area, at Punta Gorda, Florida, and Hilton Head, South Carolina.

She was preceded in death in 2014 by her husband of 43 years, James W. Brown Jr. They spent many years entertaining friends, spending time with their dogs and cats and traveling to many places.

Visitation will be Friday, Feb. 23, 2024, from 3-5 p.m. at the Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg with a small service at 5 p.m.

Graveside services will be Saturday, Feb. 24, 2024, at 1 p.m. at the Saltwell Cemetery in Inez, Kentucky.
