FPS advances to state Governor’s Cup

PAINTSVILLE — The Martin County High School Academic team won more hardware and a bid to state at the KAAC 15th Region Governor’s Cup competition Saturday at Johnson Central High School.

The Cardinals placed fourth overall following a tie-breaker with Shelby Valley for third place.

The Quick Recall team—Russell Maynard, Jayden Terry, Collin Mills and Mason McCoy—finished third.

Martin County’s Future Problem Solving team finished as runner-up and will advance to the state Governor’s Cup next month. Coached by Erica Ball, team members include Grace Caldwell, Chloe Alley, Jaycee Maynard and Dakota Ward.

Russell Maynard made a day of the regional competition. He finished fifth in Language Arts and fifth in Arts & Humanities, earning a spot on the 15th Region All-Tournament team. He also will represent MCHS and the 15th Region at the state next month.

MCHS qualified for regionals after winning runner-up overall and seeing several team members place in individual categories in the District 57 competition last month. The Quick Recall and Future Problem Solving teams finished as district runners-up. Head coach Ken Osborne’s team was honored at the district with the Katherine Hume Sportsmanship Award.

State finals are set for March 8-11 at the Galt House in Louisville.
