INEZ — Martin County Wrestling’s KHSAA Region 8 champions Rafe Price, Brock Messer, Parker Maynard and Jono Cline are the Mountain Citizen Players of the Week.
Price, a senior, pinned Carson Gillum of Ashland Blazer in 51 seconds in the final match of the 150-lb class. He pinned Camden Slone of Knott County Central in 32 seconds in the quarterfinal and Ethan Justice of Pike County Central in 1:06 in the semifinal. Price earned Most Outstanding Wrestler Upper Weight.
Wrestling at 132 lbs, Messer, a senior, defeated Dakota Ferguson of Johnson Central 3-1 in his first-place match. He defeated Creston Fuller of Mason County 12-2 in the quarterfinal and Cooper Scott of Pikeville 9-2 in the semifinal. Messer received Most Outstanding Wrestler Lower Weight.
Maynard, an eighth-grader wrestling at 144 lbs, beat Clayton Bradley of Montgomery County 8-3 in his final match. He pinned Luke Lockard of Pike County Central in 1:50 in the quarterfinal and Nathanial Williams of Ashland Blazer in 3:37 in the semifinal.
Cline went 4-0 on the day at 106 lbs, dominating Carson Matney of Johnson Central 15-2 in the first-place match. The freshman pinned Landyn Huff of Belfry in 42 seconds in the quarterfinals and Maverick Moore of Boyd County in 1:20 in the semifinal.
The four champions and teammates Julian Stafford, Nick Harless and Jake Stafford will advance to the state championships Thursday and Friday in Lexington. Gavin Stepp will accompany them as an alternate.
