BOYD COUNTY — An incident on U.S. 23 led to the arrest of Dennis Maynard, 38, of Lovely, after he allegedly fired a gun inside a moving vehicle while under the influence Friday night.

The Boyd County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene on U.S. 23 near Porter Road shortly after 9 p.m. Friday.

Upon arrival, officers discovered Maynard sitting in the middle of the southbound lane of U.S. 23, near a vehicle that had evidently swerved and crashed to avoid striking him.

Two individuals, also from Martin County, were found at the roadside. They reported having been inside the vehicle with Maynard when he began shooting. In an attempt to escape the danger, they stopped the car and fled on foot while Maynard reportedly continued to fire shots.

The victims told authorities that Maynard had consumed drugs and alcohol before the incident.

Law enforcement officials located and seized Maynard’s handgun at the scene.

Maynard faces three counts of wanton endangerment and one count of alcohol intoxication in a public place.

He is currently being held in Boyd County with bail set at $15,000 cash.
