SALYERSVILLE — Martin County rolled over Magoffin County 54-17 on the road Jan. 30.
The Lady Cards played without the services of star guard Laken Williams, who suffered a severely sprained ankle the previous night in a contest with Johnson Central.
The Lady Cards got off to a sluggish start, shooting 3 for 15 in the first quarter. Katie Marcum scored the first basket at the 5:26 mark. Kennadi Mollette broke away for a layup with 2:35 to go to put the Lady Cards up 6-2. Brooke Marcum attempted a three-point shot with 58 seconds to go and was fouled. Marcum knocked down all three free throws to give the Lady Cards a 9-7 lead. With 26 seconds to go Chloe May knocked the eyes out of a 3-pointer with 26 seconds left in the period to put the Lady Cards up 12-9.
Martin County applied pressure defense that caused the Hornets to commit several turnovers, holding them to one point in the second quarter. The Lady Cards shot a cold 5 for 15 from the field and had a 22-10 lead at halftime.
The Martin County offense warmed up in the third quarter. May hit three 3-pointers to help the Lady Cards to a 40-15 lead at the end of the period.
Martin County cruised through the final period outscoring Magoffin 17-2 to chalk up the district win.
The Lady Cards went 18 for 55 for 33% from the field and 4 of 22 from the 3-point line for a cold 18%.
Alyssa Allen led the Lady Cards with 10 rebounds, K. Marcum had nine and B. Marcum pulled down six.
May hit four 3-pointers. K. Marcum went 7 for 7 from the free-throw line. B. Marcum scored her 500th career point.
K. Marcum led all scorers with 13 points for the Lady Cards. May and B. Marcum followed with 12 each, Allen contributed seven, and Maci Maynard chipped in four points and four rebounds.
Alday Bradley led Magoffin with six points, with 6 points, Jaylee Reed and Emily Sluss added three each, Bella Trusty and Jerrica Reed netted two each and Abby Barnett flipped in one point.
