Phill Barnett
Phill Barnett, a singer-songwriter from San Branch in Lawrence County, has crafted a distinctive musical identity that blends a variety of styles, from bluegrass and Americana to folk-rock, classic rock and grunge. His songs are rich narratives of his upbringing in Lawrence County and the experiences that shaped his life.
Barnett’s musical journey began at a young age. He wrote his first song after receiving a toy guitar as a child and recorded his first full-length album in high school, which was never released. Over the years, Barnett has experimented with a wide range of genres, searching for a sound that resonated with the truth in his songs.
This journey of exploration and self-discovery culminated in 2023 with his debut single, “Nowhere.” Released in October, the track is a haunting and spiritual reflection on Phill’s roots, the impact of the opioid epidemic, and the complexities of life and love away from home. “Nowhere” represents a return to Barnett’s musical foundations and a step forward in his artistic expression.
Reflecting on this milestone, Barnett shared, “It’s been a long time coming, but I finally have a product that I love, a product that feels like a truthful representation of my songs. I remembered a more truthful approach to making music. I had to unlearn the constraints I had placed on myself.”
