PIKEVILLE — Martin County Lady Cardinals rolled over Phelps 78-38 Friday in the opening round of the girls 15th Region All “A” Classic at Appalachian Wireless Arena in Pikeville.
Martin County entered the contest with a 9-4 record while Phelps was 10-2.
The Lady Cards were strictly business from the start to the finish. Led by the dynamic duo of Katie Marcum and Laken Williams, Martin County had a 20-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Sophomore Chloe May dialed up three 3-pointers to help the Lady Cards to 25 points and a 45-16 lead in the second quarter. May’s performance tied a girls’ basketball record for the most 3-pointers in a game. Lynndsey Cassell and Jaaliyah Warren previously set the record.
The third quarter was much the same with Martin County scoring 22 points for a 67-28 lead that put the game out of reach.

“We shot the ball extremely well, maybe the best we have all season,” Newsome commented.
