Martin County grand jury issues indictments against nine people

INEZ — A Martin County grand jury delivered indictments Thursday against nine individuals.

Charges range from possession of controlled substances and firearm offenses to trafficking, cable theft and endangerment.

David Brown, 38, of Pilgrim, stands accused of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and persistent felony offender in the first degree.

The indictment states Brown was caught with a Winchester brand 12-gauge shotgun Dec. 27 after having been previously convicted of a felony in Martin Circuit Court. It also states that Brown was convicted of two prior felonies within five years of the current charge.

Martin Circuit Judge John Kevin Holbrook ordered Brown to appear on the charges Feb. 1 at 10 a.m.

Brenten R. Allen Johnson, 31, of Inez, is facing first-degree possession of a controlled substance (drug unspecified) and prescription controlled substance not in proper container. The indictment states that Johnson had a Schedule II controlled substance, hydrocodone, when he was arrested Dec. 12. The grand jury also accuses Johnson of having suboxone strips not in the properly administered container.

Johnson must appear Feb. 1 at 10 a.m. to answer the charges.

Irene A. Looney, 63, of Pounding Mill, Virginia, faces second-degree trafficking in a controlled substance  (over 20 dosage units), promoting contraband in the first degree, and possession or use of drug paraphernalia.

The grand jury accuses Looney of having 59 dosage units of Suboxone, introducing, obtaining or possessing the Suboxone into the United States Penitentiary Big Sandy, and having a balloon apparatus used for internally distributing contraband or other substances.

The judge set Looney’s bail at $10,000.

Jonathan Mollett, 35, of Louisa, is facing charges of receiving stolen property under $10,000 and persistent felony offender in the second degree.

The indictment states that Mollett was caught May 25 with a utility trailer, VIN 4YMBU1010JG045263, stolen from the Louisa Tractor Supply Company with an approximate value exceeding $2,500. The grand jury states Mollett was previously convicted of a prior felony in Martin Circuit Court within five years of the current charge.

The judge set Mollett’s bail at $5,000.

Joseph L. Stevens, 27, of Lovely, faces four counts of wanton endangerment in the first degree. The indictment states that on or before Aug. 6, 2023, Stevens engaged in conduct that created a substantial danger to Austin Harless, Homer Harless Jr., Homer Harless Sr. and Shawn Moore. His bail is $5,000.

Andrea Caudill, 23, of Auxier, stands accused of of unlawful acts relating to acquiring metals (complicity), possession of a controlled substance in the first degree (methamphetamine) and criminal trespass in the third degree (complicity).

The indictment states that Oct. 10, Caudill, acting alone or in complicity with Charles Arnold Mosley, mutilated, defaced or injured fixtures or improvements owned and operated by AT&T to obtain restricted metal, nonferrous metal or ferrous metal, with a total loss of $5,486.30; was in possession of methamphetamine; and entered and remained in a residence on Rockcastle Road in Martin County. Her bail is $5,000.

Arnold Mosley, 41, of Auxier, is facing charges of unlawful acts relating to acquiring metals (complicity), criminal trespass in the third degree (complicity), second-degree fleeing or evading police on foot, and resisting arrest.

The indictment states that Oct. 10, Mosely, acting alone or in complicity with Andrea Caudill, mutilated, defaced or injured fixtures or improvements owned and operated by AT&T to obtain restricted metal, nonferrous metal or ferrous metal, with a total loss of $5,486.30; entered and remained in a residence on Rockcastle Road in Martin County; disobeyed a command to stop by KSP Trooper Ryan Hale, who had reasonable suspicion that Mosley had committed a crime; attempted to prevent Trooper Hale from effecting an arrest by using or threatening to use physical force against the officer. His bail is $5,000.

Jeremy Jude, 27, of Tomahawk, faces a charge of possession of a controlled substance in the first degree (methamphetamine). The indictment states Jude was caught with methamphetamine Dec. 16. He must appear in court Feb. 1 at 10 a.m. to answer the charges.

John Henry Jude, 64, of Debord, stands accused of possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and persistent felony offender.

The indictment states Jude had a Charter Arms brand .38 caliber handgun Nov. 21 after having been convicted of a felony in Martin Circuit Court. The grand jury states Jude was convicted of a prior felony within five years of the current charge. His bond is $10,000.

An indictment is an accusation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
