In Loving Memory of Mary Chaffins Murphy Hinkle

Mary Chaffins Murphy Hinkle, formerly of Lovely, peacefully entered the gates of heaven Dec. 19, 2023, at the age of 98. She resided at Windsor Care Center in Mount Sterling at the time of her transition.

Born March 30, 1925, to the late Ken and Gay Evans Chaffins, Mary lived a fulfilling life dedicated to faith and family. Mary was married to the late Steve Murphy, who was the father of her 14 children. She was also preceded in death by her second husband, Ab Hinkle, son Elvie Murphy, granddaughter Angie Imhoff, siblings Jeff Chaffins, Ernie Chaffins and Carol Adkins Webb, as well as son-in-law Roger Lloyd and daughter-in-law Grace Murphy.

Mary leaves behind a legacy of love within her extensive family, spanning several generations. Her 13 surviving children are Gay Hendrie, Lavonne (Ron) DeGeorge, Jerry (Laura) Murphy, Ernie (Jane) Murphy, Glendene Lloyd, Steve (Teresa) Murphy, Quinell (Avis) Hinkle, David (Carol) Murphy, Dale Murphy, Donna (Bruce) Adam, Debbie (Tim) Puckett, Chris (Carol) Murphy, Baxter Murphy and daughter-in-law Linda Murphy. Her surviving grandchildren and step-grandchildren are Marilynn, Sean, Erin Renee, Sherry, Robert, Latonya, Tabitha, Tasha, Ernie, Lisa, Aundrea, Sabrina, Rhonda, Rod, Crystal, Cindy, Kim, Stephanie, Heather, Amanda, Shanna, Jennifer, Adam, Dale Jeffrey, Danielle, Shawn, Kandi, Eliot, Renee, David A, Justin, Nathan, David H, Amy, Steven, Kenneth, Alex and Grayson. She is also survived by a brother, Columbus Chaffins.

From a young age, Mary embraced the role of a caretaker. At the age of 9, she took on the responsibility of helping care for her siblings after the passing of her mother. She always had a song in her heart; she possessed the remarkable talent of reciting every word to hymns, even those with lengthy verses. She was celebrated for her delicious apple pie, and she found great joy in spending time with her family. A longtime member of the Oppy Church of God, Mary found strength, comfort and community in her faith. Her devotion to her church family was a testament to the values that guided her life.

Mary’s funeral service was conducted Saturday, Dec. 23, 2023, at Callaham Funeral Home, Inez, with Jeremy Cantrell officiating. Mary was laid to rest at Mountain View Memory Gardens in Maher, West Virginia.

As we say our final goodbyes, let us remember Mary for a life well-lived and a legacy that will continue to flourish in the hearts of those she touched. May she rest in eternal peace.
