INEZ — The Martin County Lady Cardinals opened the season Nov. 28 with a 56-52 win over Menifee County at home.
The Lady Cards got off to a slow start and led 14-10 at the end of the first quarter.
Momentum shifted in the second quarter as Kennadi Mollett knocked down two treys and Chloe May connected on a 3-pointer to help put the Lady Cards up 31-23 at the half.
Menifee County mounted a comeback in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Cards 16-13 to narrow the gap to 44-39. May knocked down three 3-pointers in the third quarter to help the Lady Cards stay in the lead.
The Lady Cards hung on in the final quarter for the win.
Katie Marcum led Martin County with 15 points and 12 boards. May followed with 12 points; Alyssa Allen added 10 points and seven boards; Laken Williams finished with eight points; Brooke Marcum flipped in five points, grabbed three steals and handed out five assists; Mollett added six points.
“We were very fortunate to pull this one out,” Martin County Coach Robin Newsome said. “We were a little nervous with it being the first game of the season. We played too fast and rushed a lot of things. Menifee has some talented players. I’m proud of my kids for fighting through it and pulling out our first win.”
