The Mountain Citizen Player of the Week is the late Martin County High School Principal Brian Charles, who profoundly impacted the Martin County community and beyond.

Charles, who served as the principal at Warfield Elementary for several years before assuming the principal role at the high school in June, left an indelible mark on the lives of many.

A true pillar in the Martin County community, Charles was known for his unwavering support for all students, regardless of their pursuits. His deep care for his students and genuine compassion for everyone he encountered made him a beloved figure.

Hailing from Phelps High School, Mr. Charles was pivotal in the 1988 15th Region championship basketball team, etching his name in Phelps history. His pride extended beyond his alma mater, as he enthusiastically supported all Cardinals and Martin County athletes and students.

Charles was excited and looked forward to unfolding sports seasons. He had a particular passion for basketball.

His genuine enthusiasm and ability to connect with everyone he interacted with earned him high praise from all corners of the community.

The news of his sudden passing has left a void that words cannot fill, but his legacy as a compassionate educator and fervent sports advocate will be cherished.
