INEZ — The Martin County School District is shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Martin County High School Principal Brian Charles.
Martin County Coroner Chris Todd pronounced Charles deceased Saturday at Charles’ home in Inez, saying his death was “likely due to a heart attack.”
Charles, a seasoned educator with over three decades of experience, became the high school principal in June. He honed his administrative and leadership skills as principal at Warfield Elementary School for the previous five years. Before that, he worked in the Mingo County School District.
“Brian was devoted to the students and staff,” Martin County Schools Superintendent Larry James said. “His presence will be sorely missed. He was liked and respected by everyone who knew him. We are all profoundly touched by this great loss.”
Charles was a lifelong educator. His journey in the education sector began in 1992, and he was renowned for his emphasis on fostering positive and professional relationships. He was committed to nurturing a supportive and inclusive learning environment, providing students with opportunities for success in a school setting that promotes safety, understanding and mutual respect among all stakeholders.
“We were fortunate to have had him serve in the role of principal at both Warfield Elementary and Martin County High School,” said James. “His outstanding leadership and beneficial influence on the Martin County School District will live on.”
Students, staff and parents alike were touched by Charles’ leadership, including parents like Brittany Spence.
“The kids of Martin County and all of us were so lucky to have him,” Spence said. “He will be missed. He was so good with all the kids and always so nice. You could tell he genuinely cared.”
According to James, Charles grew up in Phelps and was dedicated to his family, children and grandchildren.
“He often spoke of their many accomplishments that made him so proud,” said James. “Please keep the Charles family in your thoughts and prayers. Our hearts go out to them in this time of mourning.”
